The law of averages would indicate that there are either cultures or individual women who like having facial hair, but it is safe to say that the large majority would rather remove hair from their faces – and remove it permanently at that. How much facial hair and where, is the first thing to take into account so as to choose the best methods for your facial hair removal needs.
Facial Hair Scenarios and Recommended Facial Hair Removal Methods:
Warning: Shaving facial hair for women is not recommended.
1. Stray hairs – The focus here is on stray as in a few. They will usually appear on the cheeks and chin. As we grow older stray hairs do begin to grow due to hormones.
Recommended Method: Pluck each individual hair . This is the simplest method both in terms of procedure and cost. Regrowth. They will grow back and become noticeable in periods ranging from a week up to three weeks. As they have been pulled by the roots the regrowth period is longer and in time the follicle will weaken and this lengthens the growing period. When to apply. Wait till the hair is about a quarter of an inch long so you can grab them with your tweezers. If you try to pluck shorter hair you risk some damage on the skin. If longer, the hair can break without it coming out by the roots.
2. Eyebrows – Some people like bushy eyebrows while others don’t. Sometimes the two brows join together above the nose. And many times you simply want to delineate your eyebrows.
Recommended Methods: Both recommended methods involving removing hair from below the skin by pulling the hair by the root: Plucking/Threading: a. Plucking. Using a pair of tweezers you pluck out the offending hair. b. Threading. A cotton thread is twisted along the skin and this entwines a row of hair. You then pull it so the hairs are plucked. A very good method for shaping eyebrows. Waxing/Sugaring: a. Waxing. Spread wax thinly and then with the cloth strip rip it off. This removes the hair as well as dead skin cells. Use a wax that requires a lower temperature to avoid redness and skin irritation and over small areas. b. Sugaring. This is very similar to waxing, the difference being that you apply a sugar paste (there are different recipes for this). Regrowth. As the hair has been pulled from below the skin, the regrowth period is anywhere between two and three weeks. When to apply. About a quarter of inch in length.
3. Cheeks - Any woman with visible hair on her cheeks will want to remove it. Stray hairs will be plucked, but when it is a question of more hair, there are other alternatives.
Recommended Methods: If it is a fine growth, bleaching is an option as it disguises it. Depending on the amount of hair: Electrolysis, lasering, sugaring, threading, tweezing or waxing. Waxing, sugaring, threading and tweezing are briefly described above. Laser hair removal. A beam of light is shot at the hair and as the light penetrates the hair follicle it is disabled. It must be applied by a professional, especially on or near the eyes. Electrolysis. Again, this method should only be applied by professionals. A needle is placed onto the hair follicle and electricity is fed through a needle directly onto the individual hair – therefore a lengthy process. This is a permanent facial hair removal system. Regrowth. Laser hair removal is a semi permanent method, while electrolysis is considered permanent. On both these methods, more than one session will be needed – each has its own growth cycle which is why more than one session is needed. When to apply. Don’t apply any other method for at least a week before. On your first meeting at the laser or electrolysis clinic, the attendant will be able to give you all the necessary instructions.
4. Upper Lips – Hair on the upper lips will usually appear in women around the edges of the mouth.
Recommended Methods. One option is to bleach the hair. On the other hand waxing is a popular method. You apply a thin coat of wax (careful with the heat) and then rip off the cloth. I would highly recommend you do this in two different stages. First one side and subsequently on the other. Regrowth. This could be from two or three weeks onward. Waxing removes both the hair an dead cells so you end up with a very clear looking upper lip. When to apply. Again as in the other cases a quarter inch works well. Finally, our face skin is delicate and our faces are first line of contact with anyone. Because of the delicacy of our facial skin and its visibility , no matter which method you decide on, you should always be extra careful and avoid rushing things.
